GARDEN GROVE – Firefighters rescued a dog and two cats while fighting a house fire Thursday morning, while another dog made it out on its own.

A strong odor reported at Disneyland around that time turned out to be from the fire, officials said.

The flames were reported at about 9:15 a.m. in the area of Steele and Danberry drives, authorities said. The fire was controlled about 30 minutes later.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke permeating the house from the back bedroom, Garden Grove fire Battalion Chief Chuck Green said. About 20 Anaheim and Garden Grove firefighters were at the scene.

Two residents were inside and got out safely on their own, Green added.

Sage, a black Labrador, got out of the house while firefighters rescued two cats, Magic and Patches, and Clyde, a pit bull, said Norma Arbotast, who lives there.

Arbotast, who was in the house, said firefighters arrived within five minutes.

“The most important thing is that we’re all OK,” she said. “Everything else could be replaced.”

A natural gas odor was investigated at Disneyland, but the smell was caused by the fire, authorities determined.

3 arrested on suspicion of shooting at officers

In the early Friday morning incident, one round struck cops’ vehicle, police say

By DENISSE SALAZAR / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

ANAHEIM – Three 19-year-old men from Anaheim are behind bars on suspicion of shooting at two officers patrolling a neighborhood early Friday morning, police said.

The officers were driving in an unmarked vehicle in the area of Palm Street and Berry Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. when they believe they heard a round being shot, Sgt. Bob Dunn said.

Moments later, the officers spotted a Toyota driving toward them. That’s when one of the occupants got out and began shooting at the officers, Dunn said. At least one round struck the vehicle, but the officers were not hurt, he said.

The officers backed out of the area and requested backup. Additional officers responded and spotted the suspects’ vehicle at Anaheim Boulevard and Midway Drive, Dunn said.

The occupants – Jordy Roman Martinez, Juan Carlos Covarrubias and Andrew Gomez Sanchez – were taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

The suspects were each booked on suspicion of attempted murder and a gang enhancement for street terrorism. Covarrubias was also booked on suspicion of being in possession of a controlled substance. They are each being held in lieu of $1 million bond.

Two firearms were recovered, Dunn said.
