Orange County Sheriff Hutchens Congratulates K-9 Taffy on Retirement
Sheriff Sandra Hutchens wished a happy retirement to K-9 Taffy, one of the Department’s most highly decorated dogs. Taffy served with the Department for more than a decade and was instrumental in 13 confirmed walk-up finds while working more than 125 documented cases, including more than 50 lost persons, 12 homicides, 13 armed robberies, one kidnapping and four rapes. K-9s Taffy, left, and Reese with their handlers and Command StaffPhotos by Sheriff’s Photographer Jerry MansonTaffy and Reserve Lieutenant Williams have received numerous awards in their 10 years of service together, and have received the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Gold Star Award, California Gold Star Award, Larry Peabody Search and Rescue Award, Meritorious Service Award from the American Bloodhound Club; and was chosen as the American Kennel Club 2008 Search and Rescue Dog of the Year.
Taffy was also known as a great ambassador for the Department during her tenure, is great with the public and friendly with children, was featured in several newspaper articles, and has participated in over 100 “Officer Friendly” events and other public relations events. Taffy is the first bloodhound to retire from the OCSD Search and Rescue Unit, and after retirement, will continue to live with Reserve Lieutenant Williams and his wife, Debbie.
Sheriff Hutchens also welcomed K-9 Reese, a Bloodhound puppy that is being trained to follow in Taffy’s paw prints. Taffy’s handler, Reserve Lieutenant Doug Williams will continue to serve the Department with another K-9. Reese has been assigned to handler Reserve Deputy Brenda Ortiz.
