FULLERTON – Walkers in the annual Relay for Life raised thousands of dollars in 24 hours this weekend for the American Cancer Society.

“It went great. We had 38 teams who brought in $43,000 to $45,000,” said Lori Couto, the American Cancer Society’s senior manager for Relay for Life. “Our goal was $54,000, but we were close. In our economy, I think that is wonderful.”

The money raised helps the organization offer services such as a hotline that is always staffed with live operators and helps with research for all types of cancers.

The top fundraising teams were the Cancer Center Dream Team from St. Jude Medical Center and the Clark’s for a Cure – which had one member who walked 51.5 miles, Couto said.
